Career Manufacturing Technical Education Academy
There is a new addition being constructed at our Career Manufacturing Technical Education Academy building located north of Yankton High School along 21st Street. The YSD applied for and received a $250,000 matching grant from the Governor’s Office, which allowed us to move forward with the new addition.
For many years, Yankton High School has utilized the CMTEA facility for its welding and machining courses. This will continue during the 2017-18 school year. However, the usage of the facility will grow this year!
YHS students will take the following courses at the CMTEA facility:
• Introduction to Agriculture — Semester 1
• Technology Machines and Society — Semester 1
• Fundamental Ag Structures — Semester 2
• Intro to Cabinetry — Semester 2
• FFA — Year long
YMS Offers New Academic Offerings
It is an exciting time to be a student at YMS! The Yankton Middle School implemented an eight-period day beginning with the 2017-2018 school year. The eight-period day is providing students with additional academic offerings. The new classes include: Exploring Language, i-Technology, Media Literacy, Robotics, Digital Media, Science Olympiad, Intro to Spanish, Drama, and Sports Statistics.
The new classes are designed to serve the students and give them the opportunities to explore, engage, exceed, and master concepts within the school day. These classes mirror opportunities and introduce concepts that are being taught at Yankton High School, as well as address cultures and languages, STEM — Science Technology Engineering and Math, STEAM — Science Technology Engineering Art Math, ELA, Social Studies, CTE — Career and Technical Education and Fine Arts.
MobyMax
Yankton School District’s elementary schools are using a new personalized learning site called MobyMax. This is a K-8 learning platform for math, reading, science, and social studies equipped with adaptive tests, test-prep lessons, and motivational tools such as games and badges.
The lessons are aligned with Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. MobyMax also features specific state test-prep activities. Based on an initial placement test, students are able to start at their current proficiency level and progress through lessons at different rates. Students work through lessons to achieve proficiency, which earns them playing time in the site’s game area. Parents and teachers can have students work on skills at home or school. For students that need remediation or are looking to work on more challenging standards, Moby Max offers those chances for personalized learning.
Teachers will be using this program to support, not replace, what they are currently doing in their classrooms. Students begin by taking a computer adaptive test to determine learning goals and skill gaps. We are currently finishing these computer adaptive placement tests in the areas of ELA and Math.
Based upon students’ placement tests, a personalized learning plan is generated, and students can follow the lessons to achieve goals and close gaps. Parents will be getting log in information so the site can be used at home.
MobyMax has become the most widely used personalized learning platform in the country, and we are excited to begin using this program at YSD.
