As educators strive to provide robust, relevant instruction to every student, schools are constantly seeking innovative methods by which to deliver that instruction.

In a blended learning model, educators combine face-to-face education with online learning to develop such innovations in instruction. Although blended learning may seem to be the perfect answer, developing a successful blended learning plan can be easier said than done. As a blended learning strategist at Aldeane Comito Ries Elementary School, I’ve found that the initial planning stages are the key to an effective blended learning model.

MobyMax, a provider of personalized curricula, has launched a new cognitive skills social studies curriculum for grades 1 and 2 with grades 3-8 coming by August.

"Engaging, interactive lessons are organized into four major domains: history, geography, government and economics," according to a news release. "Each lesson uses cognitive skill manipulatives to push students to think critically about topics being covered. Additionally, lessons include quick checks for understanding to recap main ideas, periodic reviews of relevant vocabulary and short quizzes for each topic. Each lesson concludes with a comprehensive test, which provides teachers a final summative measure of mastery."

A Fascinating Look at the Future of Adaptive Curriculum and Technology Enhanced Teaching and Learning

Despite consecutive school days canceled, students at Boone County’s Sherman Elementary are continuing their studies through an online learning competition.

Assistant Principal Jacob Messer said that, out of Sherman’s roughly 425 pupils, 49 were doing online assignments Thursday, the county’s first snow day. By Friday, he said, the number had doubled, and on Saturday and Sunday, for which he took just one count for both days, there were 116 participants. By Monday, there were 123.

“You would not expect kids to want to work on their days off,” Messer said. “We should all be proud of the total team effort we’re getting right now.” 

For the competition, the Comfort school, in northern Boone, has been asking its first- through sixth-graders to each day complete seven out of nine assignments on the online MobyMax program.
