Boone County, WV isn’t exactly known for being a bastion of education technology.
But in the western coal-mining town of Comfort, WV, Sherman Elementary School is seeing success in motivating young learners to tackle the challenges of e-learning by offering a system of points and prizes.
The elementary school serves under 500 students from pre-K through the sixth grade.
Assistant Principal Jacob Messer and his staff were brainstorming ways to use a new ed-tech product called MobyMax over the summer break when they decided to hold a contest.

Despite consecutive school days canceled, students at Boone County’s Sherman Elementary are continuing their studies through an online learning competition.
Assistant Principal Jacob Messer said that, out of Sherman’s roughly 425 pupils, 49 were doing online assignments Thursday, the county’s first snow day. By Friday, he said, the number had doubled, and on Saturday and Sunday, for which he took just one count for both days, there were 116 participants. By Monday, there were 123.
“You would not expect kids to want to work on their days off,” Messer said. “We should all be proud of the total team effort we’re getting right now.”
For the competition, the Comfort school, in northern Boone, has been asking its first- through sixth-graders to each day complete seven out of nine assignments on the online MobyMax program.
Interactive, online curriculum personalizes blended learning for every child, leading to remarkable gains in students’ skills
Potomac, MD (Jan. 21, 2016) – MobyMax, innovator of personalized and blended learning curriculum for K-8 students, is helping Aldeane Comito Ries Elementary School in southwest Las Vegas reach its goal of establishing innovative, blended learning for all students.
“MobyMax sets up personal learning paths for each student and helps them fill any gaps that might be missing,” said Janice Heffernan, a blended learning strategist for the school.
MobyMax, a provider of personalized and blended learning curriculum for K-8 students, released Early Reading Trio, a new Touch Curriculum subject. In the curriculum, students start by learning sound-letter correspondences. Next, they practice interacting with familiar words in stories. Lastly, students finish the Trio by dragging and dropping words and pictures to “write” their own stories.
